Have you ever been at the office and one of your co-workers (or perhaps you sly dog) told a story from the weekend that was crazy, wild and freaking hilarious and it had everyone in stitches? Then later in the day, just remembering this story made you chuckle to yourself?
Here’s 5 ways to create your own little “breaks” at the office.
Disclaimer: It’s true that as someone just laid off I’m not in office everyday but I watch plenty of sitcoms so I’m qualified. Shove it.
1) Trivia Contest
- Supplies:
- Card board box with slit cut out of the top
- Contest Flyer and answer sheets DOWNLOAD Examples:
- RTE Office Trivia Flyer
- Prize:
- chocolate, box of girl scout cookies, pack of Starbucks bottled coffee, ect
- Trivia Questions
- 5 – 10 questions from a popular TV show (American IDOL, The Office). Make sure it’s something most of the office would know
- Cost: $5 – $10
- Directions: 1 prize is for the best/closest answers overall. Set up the box silently in the break room. Don’t let on that you know anything about it! Here’s the kicker: The only trivia question that matters is the very last one; Choose a number between 1 and 1000. (The closest one wins.)
- It’s funny because no one expects it and the fact that you stayed so quiet all day will give people the impression they never can know what cool things you’re up to!
2) Who Am I?
- Supplies: Name Badge (sticky), sense of gall
- Cost: FREE
- Directions: Continually call your best mate Bob or Harold, wear a name tag that isn’t your name
3) What the hell is that? We did an entire post on this alone: LINK
- Supplies: Rare canned foods like canned Reindeer, canned scorpion
- Cost: $2 – $6
- Directions: Imagine your office breakroom (or your desk if a breakroom is non existent). You should have a refridgerator or some place that people store their lunch. Many times people mark their lunch with their names. I’m sure “healthy Harriet” always brings a salad and boiled chicken. “Fat Frank” has his name on a carton of chocolate dipped donuts. What will you have your name on?

4) Jack Sparrow Was Here
- Supplies: An office belonging of the victim. (Stapler, favorite pen)
- Cost: FREE
- Directions: Write a ransom note.
- “Give me something at which to peer,
- push a button to have more to share.”
- Place it where the unsuspecting victim’s item used to be. Hide the item. receptionist’s stapler (if YOU are the receptionist, do it with the boss’s) Place the item by the copier (if you hadn’t figured out the riddle) with another sticky that has a red “x” on it.
5) Redefine The Office People:We did an entire post on this too: LINK
- Supplies: An imagination, access to Google search like this one
- Cost: FREE
- Directions:
- Choose someone in the office where you work
- Write 3 adjectives about each person
- Make it a positive or endearing adjective. Being mean or hateful will just increase those feelings. This, if done positively, will reward you with a strange release. (Not the kind you had when you were 12 nimrod. Stay on track!) A release through humor. It’s tre difficult to describe but oh so sweet to experience.
- Now give them their perfect job or status title.
- If it’s work= Job Title (i.e., Mob Boss) (i.e., Duchess of Perfection) (i.e., Belle of the Ball)
- Run a Google search like this one.
- Find a caricature that fits their new Job title
- Imagine this picture everytime you see them
- Smile. Because now you are friggin’ awesome.
- Read the entire post here for further instructions ideas.
What would you add to the list?
Tell us in the comment box how do you add adventure to your office work day?
Is this the dumbest list you’ve ever read and I should be shot in front of a group of monkeys dressed as Homer Simpson? (just checking…)
